MTV, launched on August 1, 1981, originally stood for “Music Television” and was based in New York City. It became the flagship channel of the MTV Entertainment Group, part of Paramount Media Networks under Paramount Global. MTV initially aired music videos, hosted by video jockeys (VJs), and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The channel played a key role in the rise of cable television and the dominance of American television in the 1990s. Over time, MTV shifted away from music programming and began focusing more on original reality shows aimed at teenagers and young adults.
