Black Entertainment Television Channel

Black Entertainment Television, commonly known as BET, is a prominent American basic cable channel primarily catering to Black American audiences. It is owned by the BET Media Group, which operates as a subsidiary of CBS Entertainment Group under Paramount Global. The channel first made its debut on January 25, 1980, as a dedicated program block. However, its popularity and unique focus on Black culture and entertainment soon paved the way for BET to evolve into a fully-fledged television channel. This milestone was achieved on July 1, 1983, marking the start of its journey as a standalone network. Over the years, BET has become a cornerstone in celebrating and showcasing Black talent, culture, and stories across the United States.

As of November 2023, BET reaches about 67 million pay television households in the U.S., down from its 2011 peak of 92 million. Despite the decline, it remains a vital platform for Black culture and entertainment.
